Chapter Four

SALVATION IN CHRIST THE PROMISE OF HEAVEN AND ETERNAL LIFE

”For what shall it profit a man,

if he shall gain the whole world, and lose his own soul?”

—MARK 8:36

There are no words to describe the frustration of being a Christian. However, that frustration grows worse when dealing with atheists. Think about it. Creation testifies to an intelligent designer—a loving God. God, out of His own perfect and just righteousness and out of His love for us, demands a high moral standard: a moral standard that we constantly fail. When measured against God’s Law, each one of us misses the mark. As mentioned before, history proves that we cannot save ourselves from our failures or from the punishment we richly deserve because of them.

Yet God, in His justice and holiness, cannot let our sins remain unpunished. More than that, because of His love for us, He hates it that sin separates us from Him. He knows even better than we how desperately we need saving, and the only One powerful enough to save us is the One Who created us in the first place. God, therefore, did the only thing He could do that would satisfy both His justice and His love for us. In the Person of Jesus Christ, He took our sins upon Himself, thereby paying our debt and offering us a chance at salvation and a restored relationship with Him. It’s all so profound, yet so simple at the same time. It seems so unbelievable, but it’s the only thing that truly makes sense. And it’s frustrating and heartbreaking when people can’t or won’t see it.

God offers everlasting life to all humanity through genuine repentance and a childlike faith in Jesus Christ. Everlasting life! Yet secular humanity doubts, ignores, and scoffs at God’s promise of salvation from death and hell. The unspeakable frustration comes in knowing what they will miss (heaven) and what they will endure (hell). But the atheist goes one further than doubting the promises of God. He doubts the existence of God, in the stark face of a creation that proves beyond a doubt that there is a God.

Such craziness makes me want to throw up my hands in despair, and then wash them of anything to do with atheism. But I can’t. Compassion won’t let me. I thank God for the love and concern that He places in those who trust Him. Without it, I’m not sure I would even care about the salvation of anyone but myself and my immediate family and friends.
